Faces in Cloth V

April 2007

This is a self-portrait. It is a strange feeling working on your own face. I see a lot of my parents peeking out.

The more that I work on faces, the more confidence I feel in changing the piece from the original photograph. Some features, like the eyes, don’t translate well through a picture into this medium without some finessing. I’ve also become more aware of how the face interacts with the background and the flow of values across the piece. I’ve started saving the cutaway pieces I make when I cut the appliques and using them like dabs of paint in certain places.
